Illustration

I  wanted to explore digital storage solutions rather than boxes and cases, this gives me a more varied area to investigate.

Bernie Reid

Bernie Reid is a photographer and illustrator who combines both of her disciplines in this piece.
This image was created from a black and white photograph, the background has marks on which help give the figure shape. Without these marks the lady would blend into the background.
The mood of the illustration is somewhat risqué, but I believe that the figure has been captured in a tasteful way. The piece has a slightly gritty feel due to the marks being blurred slightly out of focus.
The composition is balanced and set in portrait, the focal point I feel is the face this is because the rest of the piece is slightly more subdued.
The vantage point is level to the lady, resulting her not appearing powerful or vulnerable unlike many portraits. Being a stencil we do not see any colour, just black and white, resulting in the piece being extremely high contrast.

Illustration

To create this image I took inspiration from Jonathan Allardyce.
I liked his use of flat colours and a variety of line thicknesses
Central composition and level vantage point are classic for a portrait image
No background to draw attention away from foreground
To make my illustration unique I decided to do a self portrait rather than a celebrity

I wanted to get a dark moody feel across with this piece, with extremely high contrasting tones
The black background helps with the underlying mood of the image
Portraying shiny electrical equipment in a black and gray sketchy way is contrary to how we perceive these objects, this is the reason I chose to have a grainy look over the whole iPod

I took inspiration from Amy Reid to create this image, her use of grainy strokes and moody colours were relative to what i was trying to display

Jonathan Allardyce

Jonathan Allardyce is an illustrator who uses digital illustration in most of his work. He uses largely flat, bold colours and a variety of lines in his work.

Photo Manipulation

Subdued colour gives a dirty or gritty feel

Subject matter is targeting global warming

Contrast of shades

Photos all seem to have high dynamic range

Sticks to theme of adaption

Neutral background

Also water related

Again the colours are subdued

LAPP (Light Art Performance Photography)

‘LAPP’ or ‘light art performance photography’ is a group of artists who create images by playing with light in between the flash and shutter of a camera and some of the results can be breathtaking.
These images are relative to my project because just like the use of technology in today’s storage solutions, these artists use modern technology to create their artwork.
Light creates movement

Bright on dark background

Uneven composition gives informal
feel

Circular shapes look unnatural

Taken at dusk which gives the photograph poor lighting, this lighting emphasises the artificial light
Clouds create motion
All images taken at night or in dark places this helps make the synthetic light appear brighter

Different thickness of lines draws concentration around image

Erika Iris Simmons (Secondary Research)

Erika Iris Simmons creates portraits of artist using the tape pulled out of a cassette.

These portraits show how obsolete these forms of storage are.

Simmons has utilised the black tape and place it on top of a white background, this helps build a dark contrast

Central composition

Models always captured in iconic poses

This image of Michael Jackson is beautiful in it’s simplicity

Iconic pose

Bold contrasts

This piece has a wider compositon

Use of light creates more colours in hair

Black cassette adds to contrast

Statement of Intent

For this project I chose question 8, storage solutions, I decided to choose this because I saw the images of solutions like suitcases and shoe-boxes and decided to look at more modern options such as iPods and Hard Drives. I will try thinking outside the box, literally, and investigate the evolution of storage from boxes to flash drives, and the growing capacity that gadgets can hold.
Many artists use these objects as inspiration such as Erika Iris Simmons who uses tape pulled from cassettes to create beautiful portraits of famous stars. The designers of storage solutions create them to be aesthetically pleasing such as the iPod designed by Jonathan Ive; on the other hand some designs were not so successful (the AC Nielsen MP3 player).
I will aim to build a portfolio consisting of primary research, such as photographs of shoeboxes, iPods and containers. With these photographs I will create a body of imagery including dry-point prints, mono-prints, illustrations and photo manipulations. I will also gather secondary research including photographs, paintings, illustrations and promotional material. This secondary research should hopefully inspire me to create my own imagery.
I hope to use my imagery to create a final piece of promotional material to identify a piece of storage material I will be looking at my secondary research to decide what object I will use.
